would take about 6 300 years to    reach it in short everything worth    understanding in our cosmos is beyond    our lifespan however that is about to    change with the announcement that nasa    and elon musk made about their new    rocket engine that could travel at 99    percent the speed of light their    invention could change space travel    forever the speed of light is the ideal    measurement of unit of distance in space    what is the speed of light you may ask    the speed of light is estimated to be    299    792 458 meters per second sounds    impossible right but if we should    recount the speed of sound seemed nearly    impossible to reach back then but at the    moment we have a jet that can quadruple    that speed nasa and elon musk are    developing rocket engines that defy the    laws of physics the machine can travel    at 99 percent the speed of light without    using any fuel this might sound straight    out of the science fiction movie but    it's not nasa engineer david burns said    that the helical engine works by taking    advantage of how mass can change with    relative speed the engine is explained    as a novel concept for in-space    propulsion in nasa's post fuel is    collected rather than discharged from    the machine resulting in a practically    unlimited specific impulse the engine    accelerates ions in a closed loop    relativistic speeds and changes their    momentum by varying their velocity    slightly the engine and thrust by moving    the ions back and forth along the travel    direction this in-space engine is    designed to keep satellite stations    operational for extended periods without    recharging or to push spaceships beyond    interstellar distances the engine has no    moving components aside from ions    flowing in a closed-loop vacuum line    trapped inside electric and magnetic    fields the only moving parts in the    engine are ions that move in a vacuum    line while being confined inside    electric and magnetic fields doesn't it    sound quite clever and it is at least in    theory it is however not without    significant practical obstacles    according to new scientists the helical    chamber would be rather large it is    around 200 meters or 656 feet in length    and 12 meters or 40 feet in diameter but    what about in space where there is no    gravity it has equally had the potential    to function in space fully burns    mentioned that if you had enough time    and power the engine could achieve 99 of    the speed of light while the fuel less    engine is not entirely a novel concept    earlier attempts have been undertaken    robert cook a u.s inventor developed an    engine that transformed centrifugal    force into linear motion in the late    1970s a british inventor named roger    sawyer suggested them in the early 2000s    proposing that trapped microwaves might    be converted into thrust the impossible    engine was given to the m drive because    it is simply a container with microwaves    bouncing around it apparently moving    because of these bouncy microwaves and    nobody understands how it works since    the explanations go beyond our current    understanding of physics it's possible    that our knowledge of physics is wrong    or that putting this technology to the    test would disclose previously    undiscovered physical rules some    research groups claimed to have measured    a net force generated by their devices    in 2001 but the force they detected was    so weak that it couldn't even move a    sheet of paper inefficiency will become    a recurrent problem for all those    would-be unpleasant individuals    scientists have known since the    prototype's birth that the inefficiency    of these engines surpasses their benefit    we'd have to build a skyscraper-sized    megastructure to create any substantial    thrust in the helical engine however    david burns a nasa engineer who's been    working on this subject in his own time    claims to have come up with an engine    concept that could accelerate to 99 the    speed of light amazing true but there's    more this engine wouldn't even require    propellant to do this the engine was    proposed to nasa and made public on    october 11 2019. in his paper he refers    to it as the helix engine and he    describes how this futuristic spacecraft    may be propelled into orbit by in-space    engines that don't require any fuel so    what's the deal with this new helical    engine the helical engine uses a    weakness in einstein's theory of    relativity by accelerating a loop of    ions to near light speed and then    altering their velocity and mass    according to relativity principles    allowing the engine to go forward    without having to fire anything behind    it this is when things start to get a    bit complicated according to burns the    engine may be understood by glancing at    this schematic consider putting a ring    in a box that bounces in one direction    while recoiling in the opposite when the    ring within the box reaches the end    springing backward the box's recoil    direction is likewise changed in normal    conditions the box would wiggle back and    forth but because both the box and the    ring are moving at the speed of light    its mass will have grown as it travels    faster while bouncing back resulting in    forward momentum while there would be no    need for fuel this engine would require    the usage of a particle accelerator and    ion particles the spaceship is designed    to launch with no fuel by using mass    shifting phenomena at light speed    technically because the engine is said    to travel at the speed of light this    might be used to define physics rules    both the drive and robert cook's engine    were never satisfactorily demonstrated    and both violated environmental rules    the notion of conservation of momentum    is a fundamental physics principle that    states that a system's momentum remains    constant in the absence of any physical    influences while a helical engine should    not be feasible there is always
