begin elon musk first announced the company's intention to come out with a home battery solution in his april fool's day prank since then many people have been anticipating more details on the product with some even offering suggestions on its design and function based on musk's tweet in his recent master plan released this week musk wrote that tesla's current lithium-ion batteries are the best in the world but they could be made even better with new technology which will be introduced soon overview of the elon musk announcements elon musk announced the plans for tesla to release a brand new battery one that supposedly will bring tesla up to par with gasoline-powered cars in regards to traveling long distances although the plan is not yet set in stone and only a prototype has been released so far we're going to take a look at what he said and what it means for tesla before getting into musk's plan itself let's take a look at why came about the latest event by tesla in la announcing the tesla model y when elon musk revealed tesla's highly anticipated model y at an event in los angeles he started by thanking his fans this is kind of a new chapter in tesla's history and it is so fitting that it happens on april fool's day because that seems to be when everything is unveiled mask jokes and he thinks we are going to appreciate it it is definitely worth waiting for we're really excited about it tesla has always been about moving forward but there was one thing missing that is power here comes the new battery from tesla elon musk revealed the tesla's newest battery at a flashy press event in la the tesla 4680 which must refer to as the world's best battery will be unveiled next month and is expected to retail for 46 thousand dollars the new battery will be available in three sizes 6100 8100 and 10200 musk says that tesla's 4680 batteries are more than twice as powerful as any other lithium-ion battery on today's market according to musk tesla has already received 1 million pre-orders for its latest innovation they have basically sold out of our entire inventory of batteries before they even exist the demand is absolutely staggering what we know about the tesla 4680 batteries so far tesla's new battery is called a powerwall and it is about 10 inches thick and four feet wide it weighs 220 pounds it holds 13.5 kilowatts of energy or enough for daily use for most people and two days of electricity for many it comes in seven kilowatt and ten kilowatt options at three thousand dollars or three thousand five hundred dollars respectively with installation included it can be stacked to reach high capacities but that will cost you to get to twenty kilowatt hours will cost nine thousand dollars according to elon musk long story short the main features of the new batteries are firstly the tesla new battery will be less than 40 more expensive than model 3 today second tesla new battery will allow model 3 owners to drive further on a single charge than ever before thirdly tesla new battery is also much safer than conventional car batteries as it has over 700 fire resistant features built into it and thus it can withstand a significant damage without catching fire finally tesla's new battery will enable charging times of just 15 minutes for 150 miles of range in tesla cars that are equipped with special charges called superchargers which are much faster than regular electric car charges and can fully charge most electric cars in about an hour or so you can buy one starting today this is not just tesla's first consumer battery product though it is actually sold through solarcity as part of their solar plus storage service package but why because musk owns both companies and wants to provide a seamless experience from selling solar panels to using them tesla claims its power wall has some unique advantages that set it apart from its competitors including being easier to install and its design which makes it attractive for mounting on walls ceilings versus something like lead acid batteries which would need grounding rods driven into your yard concrete slab floors there are no moving parts so tesla says it doesn't have any maintenance or replacement issues either since storage reduces utility bills by providing access to cheaper nighttime rates while also having excess power available during peak hours when rates are highest tesla sees big opportunities here given all of these benefits compared to existing offerings that's why they claim 500 000 customers are already waiting in line for pre-orders globally they know there is a huge market opportunity here and they want to hit their wall in production targets around the world how elon's new batteries are different from all other car batteries let's discuss those four things we like about these batteries one they're more powerful each battery will contain 4 4680 lithium-ion cells which translates to roughly 300 kilowatt hours of energy storage number two it's going to be insanely cheap tesla claims it will cost 190 dollars per kilowatt hour when produced at scale which would make its batteries 40 cheaper than current industry offerings number three it's incredibly compact by combining cylindrical battery cells with an innovative cooling system tesla was able to create a massive amount of energy storage in a very small space number four and it should last a long time the batteries also boast what tesla says is a low center of gravity in side mounted position on model 3 that distributes crash impact evenly throughout if these claims hold true they'd make tesla's battery pack not only better than any other evpac currently available but better in almost every way than traditional car batteries as well here are some numbers from elon musk himself that give you an idea of just how much better tesla could make your commute with tesla gigafactories output alone solar city can install another one gigawatt per year of solar capacity that works out to be about eight terawatt hours per year enough electricity for about one million us homes when will these new tesla 4680 batteries arrive that's still only an estimate until things start rolling though i imagine demand might end up outpacing supply and that we might see tesla meet most if not all demand before hitting its magic number of 100 gigawatt hours shipped annually by 2023 let's hope so my take on tesla's new battery tesla's new battery technology claims it's capable of taking a standard home from solar powered to off the grid the battery is rumored to hold enough energy to power an average home for about 10 days after that it can be topped up in just one hour thanks to a tesla wall connector no word yet on pricing or availability which if you think about it is pretty upset when you consider how much we all rely on electricity in modern life perhaps more impressive than any of its technical specifications is how quickly musk and his team were able to design and build a giant tesla battery it took them only two years tesla's goal was to create a sustainable solution that could provide safe reliable energy storage while being affordable and accessible to everyone they managed to do so by developing an entirely new type of lithium-ion battery made with tesla's own patented nickel-based lithium-ion chemistry it has double the energy density at half the cost of current batteries meaning it will last longer without needing replacement this revolutionary new battery is paired with a tesla powerwall which stores electricity generated by solar panels that means homeowners who have invested in renewable energy sources like solar can store their excess power instead of sending it back into the grid this saves money because people aren't paying for utilities they don't need plus they're not adding carbon emissions to their local environment while tesla's powerwall is currently available for
